Jacaranda Journal is a biannual literary and creative publication known for its commitment to empowering emerging and established writers and showcasing the best new Australian poetry, short fiction, creative non-fiction, artwork, and photography.
Jacaranda is made up of a supportive and ambitious community of emerging editors who champion the development of writing craft, alongside production & design managers, marketing and sales. Merging in-depth editorial processes and a stylish print journal, and a dedication to elevating creative voices, Jacaranda Journal is a hub for literary collaboration. The first issue of Jacaranda was published in 2013 by a determined group of students at the University of Queensland on the conviction that the best way to grow and succeed in the literary world is together.
To date, fourteen editions of Jacaranda have been put to print. One each year between 2013 and 2022, and two editions in 2023 and 2024. Earlier editions published work drawn largely from UQ’s writing cohort, including academic essay, criticism, fiction, and poetry. In 2023, Jacaranda made the decision to open submissions to writers from across Australia, and in 2025, Jacaranda opened submissions for art for the first time, including a cover art prize, to be judged by a panel of renowned UQ artists and experts. Our most recent editions include outstanding works of poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction from right across the country.
Jacaranda Journal’s contributors have included Rae White, Liam Ferney, Felicity Plunkett, Anna Jacobson, Matthew Hooton, Kate Moody, Sharlene Allsop, Damen O’Brien, Gavin Yuan Gao, Jill Jones, Les Wicks, Christine Burrows, and many other brilliant writers and poets both established and emerging.
